AbstractThe objective of this study is to analyze the environmental quality in a sector of the Metropolitan Regions of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the largest urban areas of Brazil, using orbital data of medium spatial resolution. The environmental quality from both regions is been studied considering the following indicators: the vegetation cover, the urban heat islands and the air quality, in your relationship with the topography. The spectral mixture model MESMA were applied at optical imagery of the ASTER/Terra sensor aiming to characterize the physical properties of the urban land cover. The results obtained will be related to the thermal data collected by the same sensor to study the surface temperature standards. Air quality data collected by monitoring stations in both study areas will be related to the orbital data and integrated to the analysis. We expect from the results obtained to contribute to the Brazilian urban geography studies and possibly to assist to decision taking in the urban and regional planning field.
